A Case Study: Helping Customers Save Time And Money With Open Source
Situation:
An ESL language school owner approached Open Solutions for a quote to implement a student record intranet web application. This application should be able to store student personal data, each student’s purchased course(s), billing data for each student, invoices, some reporting screens and role management. She also mentioned another consulting firm quoted $180 per screen/page to implement the application from scratch. It sounds very simple but if you break it down, it involves at least 25 screens/pages and costs around $4,500 or more.
Solution:
We recommended an open source solution namely “CitrusDB”, a customer care and billing application. It is able to satisfy 90% of the requirements plus a lot of extras the customer didn’t ask for. We demonstrated the application and quoted 5 days of work to customize the application to satisfy the missing 10% of the requirements. The customer was happy with the CitrusDB application and our quote therefore she offered the project to us.
Result:
Instead of spending $4,500 or more with the other consulting firm, the customer paid less than half of that for the full package including annual support and installation. Plus, the open source application is already well-tested and offers higher quality.
